Metric and US Cooking Measurements
A practical guide to using metric and US cup measurements with less guesswork.
Weight is the most reliable measure
Grams are usually more consistent than cups, especially for flour, oats, cheese, and chopped vegetables. A kitchen scale removes ambiguity caused by how tightly ingredients are packed.
When a recipe gives volume, use standard measuring cups and level dry ingredients with a straight edge.
- 1 litre equals 1,000 ml.
- Use millilitres for small liquid quantities.
- Do not assume every cup of an ingredient has the same weight.
Adapt rather than chase perfection
Home cooking is forgiving. Use a little less liquid at first, taste as you cook, and adjust. Texture cues such as tender rice, a thickened sauce, or a golden crust matter more than tiny measurement differences.
Know when precision matters
Baking, preserving, and recipes with a delicate texture benefit most from weighing. Soups, stews, salads, and skillet meals are more flexible, so ingredient swaps and approximate measures generally work well.
